End-use sectors are constantly shifting to consume higher quality energy.

Source: BP World Energy Outlook 2018. Primary energy consumption grew by 2.2% in 2017. That is the fastest growth rate since 2013, as BP observes in their recently published Statistical Review of World Energy 2018. Only a fraction of that growth was covered by new renewables (wind and solar),

These needs arise from changes in the usage of the grid, which is influenced by the scale and location of electricity consumption, generation, interconnection and   Added new sections on coal and gas power technology, the future grid, energy access, policy and the LCOE of phase II decarbonization technology such as CCS,  Natural Gas. EIA’s International Energy Outlook 2018 (IEO2018) focuses on how different drivers of macroeconomic growth may affect international energy markets in three heavily populated and high economic growth regions of the world: China, India, and Africa.

Energy use in non-OECD countries is projected to grow by 2.2% per year, and the share of non-OECD energy use is expected to rise from 54% of total world energy use in 2010 to 65% in 2040. Through 2040, the IEO2017 projects increased world consumption of marketed energy from all fuel sources, except for coal demand, which is projected to remain essentially flat. Renewables are expected to be the fastest-growing energy source, with consumption increasing by an average 2.3% per year between 2015 and 2040. Under ambitious climate scenarios, the global economy becomes much more energy efficient, global coal consumption declines by more than half relative to current levels, oil use falls by up to 20%, natural gas increases modestly, nuclear energy grows by more than 50%, renewables more than double, and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies are deployed at scale by 2040. That is the fastest growth rate since 2013, as BP observes in their recently published Statistical Review of World Energy 2018. Only a fraction of that growth was covered by new renewables (wind and solar), Electricity generation from renewable energy sources rises from a share of 17% last year to 19% in 2020 and to 21% in 2021. The increase in the renewables share is the result of additions to wind and solar generating capacity. Total 2017 U.S. energy consumption was 97.7 quadrillion British thermal units. The biggest contributor was natural gas at 31.8% and petroleum at 28%. The biggest contributor was natural gas at 31.8% and petroleum at 28%.
