The Interior Department implemented a new policy Thursday aimed at streamlining the oil and natural gas drilling process on federal land by cutting back on the opportunities for drilling opponents There are currently 534 active oil and gas wells across 12 units of the National Park System. There are 30 additional national parks with some “split estate” lands, but no active drilling at this point. Drilling plays live, breathe, and die based on science and economics. Pressures, flow rates, rock mechanics, oil prices, natural gas prices, steel costs, land acquisition costs – all these and more are continually influencing oil and gas development. Remember, it takes two to tango – both oil companies and mineral owners joining together. When you sell or lease the mineral rights to your land, you’re giving an oil and gas company permission to drill for minerals beneath the surface of your property. The land where your home, pastures, garage, barn and other buildings reside is considered surface rights . Drilling an oil well is a massive project that requires multiple teams of workers and very deep pockets. But money and manpower aren't enough. Before beginning, there will be permits and proposals to fill out, serious research to conduct, and some very specialized equipment to obtain.
